The Long(ma) Story
The story of Rijk Zwaan's innovative white cabbage variety, Longma.
At Rijk Zwaan, we know that innovation and adaptability are key to meeting the ever-evolving needs of our customers and consumers. Longma RZ, our white cabbage, is a prime example of this innovation.
Specifically developed to thrive in cold weather and intended for open-field, over-winter storage, Longma RZ is changing the way growers think about cabbage cultivation in regions not traditionally known for overwintering crops.
Historically, in some coastal areas in Ireland and Scotland, growers have overwintered cabbage in the field, but it never caught on in England, where it is seen as more of a risk. Keith explains “Four years ago, I discovered that despite experiencing temperatures of minus 8 degrees Celsius, a trial of Longma in Lancashire showed no signs of frost damage at all. Meanwhile, the variety right next to it was full of frost! We conducted further trials and were delighted with the findings - that Longma can in fact cope with temperatures as low as this. We believe this is due to its looser internal structure, compared to other varieties.”
This incredible resilience to freezing temperatures is a game-changer for growers who have been dealing with the rising energy costs of cold storage. Longma provides a lower-cost solution for overwinter storage.
The other big advantage of Longma is its high, erect habit and the fact that the plants stand very straight, making them exceptionally easy to mechanically harvest saving both time and labour costs.
Longma RZ is transforming the landscape of cabbage farming. Its cold resistance and easy mechanical harvestability have made it a valuable addition to forward-thinking farmers. Longma stands as a shining example of how innovation and adaptability are key to success!
