An old-favourite.
Rugantino is a ‘Coeur de Boeuf’ variety, which means it is ribbed. It does not have the pointed end that some oxhearts have – making it easier to pack than some other big, heart-shaped varieties. This meaty, well-flavoured fruit is best suited for slicing fresh.
Rugantino is vigorous and easy setting; it performs well under a wide range of conditions, including unheated greenhouses and outdoor cultivation. Ox hearts are large and fleshy, they require staking.
For best results, harvest the fruits at the breaking stage to maximise their shelf life.
